project 4: an active portrait
Although I have friends who can take direction fairly easily and just get on with an activity while being photographed, for this project I wanted to use someone who really doesn't like having their picture taken, in order to stop the photos looking posed or directed. I asked Mike to just carry on with the gardening while I wandered around with the camera. What I noticed was that even though I was observing the subject going about an activity, it was still quite hard to keep up with him as he moved around. I took over 60 pictures in under an hour and picked the ones that I felt worked best or the ones that made me laugh due to the expression. I also noticed how generally serious he looked when concentrating on the task at hand and not taking notice of me.
